这首歌是1960年一部音乐剧The Fantastice（《异想天开》）中的序歌和终曲。剧本叙述相邻的两家的一对青年男女，在双方家长的怂恿下产生了爱情，但不久，浪漫情调消失了，两个年轻人彼此感到厌烦，各自去寻找应该珍惜的。“受过创伤才充实富有，九月的热情使我们成熟。”该剧演了将近30年，被译成15种文字，在近70个国家进行公演，打破了音乐剧演出的世界记录。1987年，中央歌剧院还将该剧搬上我国舞台。
《Try to Remember》自1965年由Ed Ames录制成唱片后，一跃成为最受欢迎的歌曲之一。美国的Brothers Four,希腊的Nana Mouskouri等都录唱过这首歌
